My “favorite photos” folder covers 30 plus years of photography, but all but two of my favorite photos for October 20 were taken the same day in Acadia National Park.

Favorite Photo, October 19
It was my first full day at Acadia National Park and I was in photography heaven. My research into the best season to photograph each of the national parks made one thing clear, Acadia was one of the best places to be in the fall, and this was my first trip to check the place out.
Favorite Photo, October 13
My favorite photo for October 13 started with a note from a photo editor asking if I had a nice fall image of Pt. Iroquois Lighthouse. I said I didn’t but I was heading up north and I would try to get one.
Favorite Photo, October 12
In my October 9 post in this series I mentioned taking iPhone photos in my garden as a result of an interview for a photography article for the Akron Beacon Journal. I was back at it in my garden on October 12.
Favorite Photo, October 8
It was a gorgeous day in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and I was at Michigan’s iconic waterfalls. It doesn’t get much better than this. This is my favorite photo for the day and one of my all time favorite photos.
Favorite Photo, October 7
This is the story behind one of my favorite images. It was a dreary cloudy, day in Banff with rain and drizzle off and on all day long. Most of the afternoon I was hanging out in the fireplace room at a bed and breakfast and visiting with the other guests, all Canadian.
Favorite Photo, October 5
The choice for today’s favorite was really difficult. I have several favorite photos taken in Michigan, Colorado, and Banff National Park, and a couple of them are among my all time favorite photos. And there was also a special wedding. I ultimately chose two most favorite images for this date. This is one of them.
Favorite Photo, October 3
It was hard to pick my favorite photo for October 3, with so many to choose from. I finally decided on this photo of Double Arch at night. It was a splendid evening and photographers were everywhere taking long exposures of the night sky and the arches.

My favorite photo for this date was taken on a photo safari with Bob, my brother-in-law and photo buddy. We worked our way across southern Colorado to Utah and had a great time.

It was an amazing morning at Sprague Lake. A long row of photographers was lined up on the lake shore, looking east. The light just kept getting better and better and shutters were clicking like crazy.

Ohio Health is a big medical conglomerate in central Ohio with 10 hospitals and lots of medical clinics. I was documenting their Prism Awards ceremony, Ohio Health’s equivalent of the Academy Awards. Several individuals or health care teams are nominated in advance each of a number of categories. Like the Academy Awards, the winner in each category is announced at the ceremony.
Favorite Photo, September 8
I checked my “favorite photos” folder for photos taken on September 8. I found only one photo, but it is a keeper.
Favorite Photo, August 31
My favorite image for August 31 comes from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York.
Favorite Photo, August 30
As I looked at my favorite images for August 30, I quickly narrowed my choices down to three, but then it got really difficult. I ended up with a landscape image, a portrait, and a wildlife image. I wanted to call it a three way tie, and depending on my mood, I pick a different image out of theses three each time I choose a favorite.
Favorite Photo, August 28
My favorite photo for August 28 is from a once in a lifetime trip to Alaska. My wife and I celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary with a five day cruise on Prince William Sound followed by five days at Camp Denali in Denali National Park.
Favorite Photo, August 20
When I looked at my “favorite photos” folder for August 20, what jumped out at me were images from Alaska and from a dance recital. It was a tough call. I ended up choosing a photo of Turnagain Arm in Alaska.
Two Photographers and Eleven Outdoor/Travel Writers Pick the Best National Parks for Fall
Fall is a fabulous time of year to visit the national parks. Crowds are usually smaller than in the summer, temperatures are cooler, and some of our national parks have glorious fall colors. With so many to choose from, where should you go? Which national parks will provide the best photographic opportunities in the fall?
The Best National Parks for Fall Photography
What are the best national parks to photograph in the fall? Here are my choices, grouped by state and province from west to east. This list includes the favorites I have been to, plus the ones I most want to see based on the recommendations of the photographers I trust, like Tim Fitzharris and QT Luong. More about them later.
Favorite Photo, August 19
In my “favorite photos” folder there is only one photo for August 19, but it is very special to me.
Favorite Photo, August 17
My favorite photos for August 17 were taken one year apart. I was on my way home from a photo workshop in Northern Michigan and spotted a bunch of yard art in the village of Elmira Michigan.
Favorite Photo, August 16
Easy choice today. I went through my favorite photos folder and found two photos taken on August 16. This one is far and away my favorite for sentimental reasons.
Favorite Photo, August 15
My August 15 photo was an easy pick. I was leading a photography workshop in northern Michigan. We were about to wrap up a night time field trip when I saw a little bit of a flicker in the northern sky. Northern Lights! So instead of packing up we stayed out longer.
Favorite Photo, August 14
My favorite photos for August 14 all came from the same year, 2016. I was leading a photography workshop in Northern Michigan and we were out on an evening field trip. It turned out to be a great evening for photography, so it was hard to pick THE favorite photo for the day.
Favorite Photo, August 4
My favorite photo for this date is a Cardinal Flower. I was a Sarett Nature Center northeast of Benton Harbor, Michigan. Early August is the time for Cardinal Flowers. They like a pretty wet area to grow in so you take a boardwalk trail out to the wetland area where they grow and bloom.
