I woke up this morning with this curious question on my mind: “What is the best photo I have ever taken on August 6?”
And then I got to wondering what a collection of photos would look like if I picked my favorite photo for each date of the year, all 366 of them (if I happened to take any favorite photos on Feb 29). So out of curiosity I decided to start with August 6 and see what I came up with.
I have a folder on my computer with over 3,400 of my favorite images. It includes digital photos going back to 2003 (the year I got my first serious digital camera, a Canon 10D) and my favorite scanned slides going back to back to 1985 (with a small smattering of photos prior to 1985). If I took an equal number of photos on each day of the year (I don’t), I should find an average of about 9 photos for each date of the year.
So I went back through each year to see if I took any photos on August 6. I only found three photos, all of them portraits.
I already knew August is not my favorite photography month for nature photography. It looks like it isn’t for people photography either. That is a project I need to explore in the future.
Of the three favorite photos I found taken on August 6, this pre-wedding date portrait of Sarah is the best. Taken August 6, 2003.
I was testing my first serious digital camera, a Canon 10D. I wanted to know how much flash exposure compensation I would need on the plus side to get a light and bright wedding dress. With no flash exposure compensation, the auto exposure system in digital cameras will take a white dress and render it closer to gray. Sarah was happy to put on her dress a few months before the wedding and let me experiment.
This was so taken so long ago that there is no metadata attached to the file. I have no idea what settings I used. The only reason I know the date for this image is my habit of putting the date at the beginning of the file name.
