My favorite photos for August 17 were taken one year apart. I was on my way home from a photo workshop in Northern Michigan and spotted a bunch of yard art in the village of Elmira Michigan.
I was anxious to get home and said to myself “I can stop and do this another time” and drove on by. Then I said what good photographers say to themselves “Do it now. You may not get another chance.” So I went back. The blue sky with clouds looked interesting and the sun was at the right angle to create great light. My favorite of several favorite images was taken from a low angle, laying on the ground, and shooting up at a painted metal rooster. August 17, 2015. It is a good thing I stopped. I have been by this place several times since then and the light has never been as nice.
The store is String of Pearls in the tiny town of Elmira Michigan (west of Gaylord). If you are in the area, stop and look around.
My second most favorite image on this date was taken at a photography workshop in Northern Ohio. Jeremy Bruskotter and I were leading a field trip on South Bass Island in Lake Erie. We went to South Bass Island to take pictures but it was a gray sky day and not very good for lighthouse pictures. But someone had created a new butterfly garden near lighthouse and it was filled with butterflies of several kinds. Plus the soft light was perfect for the butterflies. We all made the most of the opportunity. August 17, 2014.
South Bass Island (home of Put-in-Bay) is a big tourist destination. If you end up there, head for the lighthouse. It is a great subject on a sunny day. And check out the butterfly garden while you are there.
