Favorite Photo, October 8

Upper Tahquamenon Falls, Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. October 8, 1998.

It was a gorgeous day in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and I was at Michigan’s iconic waterfalls. It doesn’t get much better than this. This is my favorite photo for the day and one of my all time favorite photos.

The water gets it unique amber/tea color from tannin leached from Cedar, Spruce, and Hemlock trees in the swamps drained by the Tahquamenon River.

From Tahquamenon Falls I drove to Seney National Wildlife Refuge near Germfask. It is one of my favorite places on the planet.

Tree Reflections at Dusk, Seney National Wildlife Refuge, Michigan’s U.P. October 8, 1998.

At the end of a beautiful day at the wildlife refuge, the light was fading rapidly in the west as I took my last few photos. The fading light of dusk ended up being my second favorite photo of the day. What a great day!

Dove Cloud and Venus over the Rockies. October 8, 1989

My third place favorite photo for October 8 was also taken late in the day. I had finished a long and happy day creating images at Rocky Mountain National Park. I was driving back to Estes Park when the view in my rear view mirror caught my eye. A white, dove shaped cloud was hovering over the planet Venus and the clouds above the mountains had turned crimson. I jumped out of the car to capture the image before the light faded.

Christian. Worthington, Ohio. October 8, 2011.

My fourth place photo for October 8 came from a photo shoot with Christian. We created images outside in several locations as well as at my studio. This photo in front of a graffiti covered wall with peeling paint is my favorite of the day.

Canadian Pacific RR, Banff Station. October 8, 2012.

October 8 was part of my trip to Banff National Park which has been featured in prior posts in this series. But it was not a good day for photographing landscapes in the park thanks to rain and low lying clouds. I was driving back to the town of Banff when I met this train. I was drawn to the way the light from the headlights was reflecting off the parked train cars, tracks, and the train station. FYI, the train was not moving so I had plenty of time to set up a tripod and create this image.

“Earthshine”, Lunar Eclipse. October 8, 2014.

I am always drawn to eclipses of the moon, and I particularly like how this image of the partially eclipsed moon turned out. I seriously overexposed the sunlit part of the moon so I could record the earthshine on the eclipsed part of the moon. Earthshine is the faint amount of sunlight that bounces off the earth and lights the dark part of the moon.

October 8 has been a very good day for photography!

Upper Tahquamenon Falls and Seney National Wildife Refuge, both in Michigan, Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado, and Banff National Park in Alberta are all excellent locations to do photography.
