Shannon Miller is the most decorated U.S. gymnast, male or female, at the Olympic Games, with a total of 7 medals. She was part of the gold medal winning “Magnificent Seven” team at the 1996 Olympics. It was my happy privilege to photograph her a few months after she won several medals at the 1992 Olympics.
Several Olympic gymnasts from around the world were in Oklahoma City for an “Olympics Spectacular” at the Myriad Arena. I was on the arena floor in between the cameras of two of the national TV networks.
During a 15 minute intermission, Shannon walked up to me and asked if I would keep an eye on her gear bag. I said yes and she gave me her bag. After the intermission she came back to get it and thanked me. Eighteen years later I contacted her for permission to use the photos in my upcoming photography book in the well known Dummies series.
My third favorite image for October 11 was taken on the island of Mo’orea, French Polynesia. Some experts say Mo’orea is one of the three of four most beautiful islands in the South Pacific. I haven’t been to the others, but I agree. Mo-orea, sister island to Tahiti, is a beautiful place to spend a weekend, or a week, or longer.
And finally, my last favorite image for October 11 is a causal portrait of our dog, Sunny, on our front porch.
