If you read the October 27 post, you already know why the Colorado trip with my brother John was so important.
October 28 we were wandering favorite childhood places in south central Colorado. We drove to the little town of Westcliffe in the Wet Mountain Valley. This was a favorite childhood spot. Our family would drive to Westcliffe and explore the lakes and streams near the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. We loved the “Sangres” and the view from Main Street is impressive.
We both took pictures of a labeled map of the mountains.
U.S. 69 going north from Westcliffe connects with U.S. 50. Several north of Westcliffe is the historic Beckwith Ranch. The red roofs is one of the things I still look for as I drive along this highway. This is my third favorite photo for October 28.
The Arkansas River parallels U.S. 50 as it winds itself between steep canyon walls. This is my second favorite photo for this date. Head west on U.S. 50 and you end up in Salida, Colorado, another favorite childhood town. O’Haver Lake, the Wasatch Mountains, and the Collegiate Peaks are all in the area. Salida was John and I’s base of operations for the first part of our trip.
