Channeling My Inner Lindsay Adler

Lela Rae, December 13, 2007.

I was working in the studio with the beautiful Lela Rae. This is an example of cross lighting which creates nice contours and shadows. There is one light to her left and one to her right, almost directly opposite each other. I decided to use colored gels over the lights which I thought would enhance the look of the image..

This image of Lela Rae, created several years ago, is reminiscent of some more recent work by Lindsay Adler. Adler is a stunning portrait photographer. I discovered her work a few years ago, and her book, The Photographer’s Guide to Posing, Techniques to Flatter Everyone, is on my bookshelf. If portrait photography is your thing, this book is a must read.

Portrait Using Colored Gels by Lindsay Adler, Uploaded to Adler’s web site May 2020.

It was like deja vu when I saw this gorgeous portrait by Adler. The lighting and pose is a work of art. I didn’t know about Lindsay Adler when I created my portrait of Lela Rae, but I like to think I was channeling her work back then anyway. I have certainly benefited from her book, blog articles, and videos. When I grow up I want to create images like Lindsay Adler.
