Thanks to Michelle and Kim at the Sugar Shack (see my prior post), I was in Norman Rockwell Heaven. I love Norman Rockwell. Before I stopped at the Sugar Shack I did not know Rockwell lived just a few miles away.
I crossed the Arlington covered Bridge and there was Norman Rockwell’s home. The Rockwells lived her from 1939-1953. There are twin, lookalike homes sitting side by side. Rockwell bought the one to the west. Along with the house there were several outbuildings on the property. To find Rockwell’s home, just head west from “downtown” Arlington Vermont on Batten Kill Road (VT 313) and turn south in 4.4 miles at the covered bridge.
Rockwell had one of the larger outbuildings converted into a studio and he had a large, north facing window installed.
When Jarvis Rockwell developed an interest in painting, Norman had another, smaller outbuilding converted to a studio for his son.
When Rockwell looked north from his home or studio, he could see the Chapel on the Green.
To the west he could see this farm.
I wandered the grounds and created images for as long as I could before I had to head for home. What a great place to create art!
If you want to stay at Rockwell’s home, contact Rockwell’s Retreat at the link below.
Rockwell’s house is south and a little to the west of the yellow “Rockwell environs” pin. It is mostly hidden in the trees. The neighbor’s twin house is to the east of Rockwell’s house and it is more visible. The winding road to the west of his house goes south to both studios and ends up at a house. The small studio is easily visible and Rockwell’s studio is more hidden in the trees. To the west you can see the farm that is in my photograph. The Chapel on the Green is north of Rockwell’s home on the west side of the road. The highway north of the covered bridge takes you east to Arlington Vermont or west to the New York state line.
