Adobe CC is the latest version of Adobe Photoshop and it is only available on a subscription basis. You can buy the prior version, Adobe Phostoshop CS6 (which is now the “legacy” version) and use it for as long as you want, but you will no longer be able to buy future upgrades of Photoshop as a one time purchase. A lot of photographers, myself included, don’t like the new subscription plan, but that is a story for another time. From now on you can only get upgrades to Photoshop via a subscription plan.
Photoshop CS6 costs $630 and Lightroom 5 costs $70, so the subscription plan is a bargain if you are starting out. You are getting $700 worth of software for $120 per year (and you are getting the latest version of Photoshop). Plus you get all of the upgrades as part of the subscription service. With the subscription service you can use both software packages for 5 years for less than if you went out and bought both today.
I used to get every second or third upgrade to Photoshop at a cost of around $160 per upgrade. So Photoshop was actually costing me, on the average, about $50 to $80 dollars per year. Throw in Lightroom with the upgrades and I was spending closer to $100 per year in total, so the subscription service won’t make a huge difference in my total outlay. Still, I would prefer to decide for myself when I want to spend money to get an upgrade. So I liked the old system better. But that was then and this is now. Photoshop has become so essential to what I do that I would prefer to have the upgrades as opposed to using Photoshop CS6 forever.
